Reselling on Vinted: source, check, resell

Reselling on Vinted means buying a piece below its value (flea market, thrift shop, car boot sale), checking it, presenting it well and reselling it at market price. The margin is made when you buy: knowing a sought-after model when you see one. And if you do it regularly, it’s a business, with its own rules.

In short

  • The margin is made when you buy: learn to spot sought-after models.
  • Check the resale price on Vinted before you buy, phone in hand.
  • Check authenticity: labels, stitching, logos, finish.
  • Work out your real margin: sale price − purchase price − your costs (cleaning, packaging, travel).
  • Buying to resell regularly is trading: register it and use a Vinted Pro account.

Two real examples

ItemBoughtResoldGross margin
Adidas Samba Wales Bonner (flea market)€15€400€385
Isabel Marant sweatshirt€24€70€46

Gross margin = sale price − purchase price. The Vinted fee is paid by the buyer; you still need to subtract your own costs (cleaning, packaging, travel).

Where to find pieces

  • Flea markets and car boot sales: the lowest prices, if you get there early.
  • Thrift and charity shops: volume, usually fixed prices.
  • Consignment shops: branded pieces, pricier, but already sorted.
  • Friends and family: their wardrobes are often the best place to start.

What to buy

  • Identifiable pieces: brand and model readable on the label.
  • Sought-after models rather than brands in general: a collaboration or an iconic model can be worth ten times an ordinary piece from the same brand.
  • Resellable condition: skip what you can’t repair or clean.
  • The habit that changes everything: look the item up on Vinted before paying, to see the real price range.

Check authenticity before you buy

Counterfeits are banned on Vinted. Before buying, look at the label (font, composition, country), the stitching, the logo quality and the finish. For buyers, Vinted also offers a paid Item Verification service on eligible items.

In Vendly, the authenticity check analyses your photos (label, stitching, fastening) and gives you a reasoned opinion in about forty seconds. It’s not a certificate: it’s an extra pair of eyes before you pay.

Track your margin and your stock

Write down the purchase price of every piece the moment you buy it. Without it, you can’t know what you really earn. A spreadsheet is enough to start. In Vendly, the inventory keeps the purchase price, the status (to list, live, sold) and calculates the profit on each sale.

The rules: tax and status

  • EU (DAC7). Platforms like Vinted report sellers who reach 30 sales or more than €2,000 in a year to the tax authorities. Being reported doesn’t automatically mean you owe tax.
  • UK. Online platforms report sellers with 30 or more items, or about £1,700 or more, in a year to HMRC. Selling your own unwanted things is generally not taxed; buying to resell is trading, and the £1,000 trading allowance applies to trading income.
  • Buying to resell regularly is a business: register it according to your country’s rules, declare your income, and use a Vinted Pro account.

Frequently asked questions

Is reselling on Vinted legal?

Yes, but buying to resell regularly is a business activity: you need to register it according to your country’s rules, declare your income and use a Vinted Pro account.

When does Vinted report sellers to the tax authorities?

In the EU, from 30 sales or more than €2,000 of sales in a calendar year (DAC7 directive). In the UK, from 30 items or about £1,700. Being reported doesn’t necessarily mean you owe tax.

What sells well for resale on Vinted?

Identifiable pieces (brand and model on the label), in resellable condition, and above all sought-after models. Always check the price range on Vinted before buying.

How can I be sure an item is authentic?

Examine the label, stitching, logo and finish, compare with photos of authentic pieces, and get a second opinion if in doubt. No photo-based check equals a certificate.
